What is 'Disability Confident'?
Disability Confident is a voluntary government scheme designed to encourage employers to recruit and retain disabled people and those with health conditions. Disability Confident provides employers with the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to attract, recruit, retain and develop disabled people in the workplace.
It has replaced the previous Two Ticks Positive About Disabled People scheme, and it's development and delivery are guided by a group of business leaders who make sure the scheme is meeting the needs of businesses and disabled people in the UK. Its made up of employers drawn from different industry sectors and includes disabled people in the group.
Being Disability Confident is important for a number of reasons:
- It enables you to reach the huge pool of talent amongst disabled people, and recruit, retain and develop people with the skills you need
- It increases your understanding of disability and how to make the most of the opportunities provided by employing disabled people
- It removes barriers that might be preventing disabled people and those with long term health conditions from accessing employment with you
- It allows you to play your part and become more inclusive, in ensuring that disabled people have opportunities to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations
By becoming Disability Confident we are committing to:
- Ensuring our recruitment process is inclusive and accessible
- Communicating and promoting vacancies
- Offering an interview to disabled people who meet the minimum criteria for the job
- Anticipating and providing reasonable adjustments as required
- Supporting any existing employee who acquires a disability or long term health condition, enabling them to stay in work
- At least one activity that will make a difference for disabled people
